Ascites typically occurs when there is a decrease in albumin levels in the blood. Albumin is a protein synthesized by the liver that plays a critical role in maintaining oncotic pressure, which helps keep fluids within the bloodstream. When albumin levels drop, often due to liver dysfunction or conditions such as cirrhosis, the oncotic pressure decreases, allowing fluid to leak into the abdominal cavity and lead to the condition known as ascites.

This fluid accumulation is a common complication of liver disease, heart failure, and other circumstances that affect the balance of fluids in the body.
